Powerball

Powerball is an American interstate lottery game played on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 10.59pm EST. Known for generating huge jackpots that can sometimes run into ten figures, 45 states and three jurisdictions across the United States participate in Powerball, with winners coming from every corner of the country.

Players select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26. To win the jackpot, players must match all five main numbers and the Powerball drawn on the night. Another eight prize tiers are available in each draw, including a prize for matching the Powerball alone. The minimum jackpot is worth USD$40 million.

Power Play

For an additional fee, players can add the supplementary Power Play game to their ticket, which could increase the value of any non-jackpot prizes won. A 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x multiplier can be drawn at random in all games, while a 10x multiplier can come into play when the jackpot is worth USD$150 million or less.

Players who match five main numbers as well as the Power Play number receive a fixed prize of USD$2 million, regardless of the Power Play number drawn. The following table shows the odds on each Power Play ball being drawn when the 10x multiplier is on offer:

Double Play

From August 2021 a second draw was introduced. This is known as the Double Play game. The Double Play draw takes place just after the main Powerball drawing and gives players the chance of winning up to $10 million with their Powerball numbers. If you want to play the Double Play feature, all you have to do is add the option to your playslip. The cost per line is $1.

Powerball History

The multi-jurisdictional Powerball game was first launched in 1988 as Lotto*America before being renamed to Powerball in April 1992. Players have always had to select five main numbers and one Powerball number but there have been several changes to the number matrix since the launch.
Wednesday 22nd April 1992 - Saturday 1st November 1997 - Players had to choose five main numbers from a choice of 45 and one Powerball from a choice of 45 - Matrix of 5/45 + 1/45.

Another key change to the game has been the introduction of Power Play in 2001, while the price of a ticket has gone up to USD$2 to help pay for even greater rewards. The prizes have been altered across the various tiers over the years to drive up excitement, and the jackpots have kept getting bigger.
Thursday 30th January 2020 – Powerball launched in Mississippi, taking the total number of participating jurisdictions to 48
Monday 23rd August 2021 - A third weekly drawing is introduced, with draws now taking place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. During this time, 13 jurisdictions introduce Double Play. This is a second drawing, that takes place soon after the main Powerball draw, in which players are given the chance to win up to $10 million for the additional price of $1.

Biggest Jackpot

The Powerball jackpot broke through the USD$1 billion barrier for the first time in early 2016, setting a new record for the biggest world lottery prize ever offered. It was finally won on 13th January 2016, when three ticket holders - Marvin and Mae Acosta from California, the Florida-based Nickel 95 Trust and Lisa and John Robinson of Tennessee - split USD$1.58 billion, winning USD$528.8 million each.
